Helmet Liners for Marines

I recently had a phone call from the mother of two Marine Corps Majors, who asked me to let you know about the helmetliner program our local chapter of the DAR is participating in. The orgranization is Grass Valley Captain John Oldham Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, and the program is "Knitting for Marines." This is an on-going effort to make and distribute wool helmet liners to Marines stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan and is part of our local DAR Project Patriot Program. This program provides an opportunity for our local community knitters to provide warmth and comfort to our troops abroad.
This link will take you to instructions for knitting a helmet liner, which can be dropped off at Fibers anytime for pickup and shipment.
Please be sure to check your gauge carefully...only helmet liners made to these exact specs will be sent to our troops. Also, only 100% soft wool yarn will be accepted, because our Armed Forces are not allowed to wear synthetic fibers. Wool is inherently non-flammable and won't melt against the skin in the event of an accident and will stay warm even when wet. Please follow all knitting directions precisely.
Marines apparently prefer desert tan as a color. I'll make an effort to stock the acceptable colors and helmetliners will be collected at Fibers as long as the program is needed.
